Unfortunately, it is not fully known what exactly causes depression. There are numerous theories about causes such as biological and genetic factors, environmental influences, and childhood or developmental events. However, it is
generally believed that depression is most often caused by the influence of more than just one or two factors. For instance, a person whose mother had recurrent major depression may have inherited a vulnerability to developing clinical depression (genetic influence). This combined with how the person thinks about him- or herself (psychological influence) in response to the stress of going through a divorce (environmental influence), may put him or her at a greater risk for developing depression than someone else who does not have such influences.
The causes of depression are likely to be different for different people. Sometimes a depressive episode can appear to come out of nowhere at a time when everything seems to be going fine. Other times, depression may be directly related to a significant event in our lives such as losing a loved one, experiencing trauma, or battling a chronic illness.

As a very broad translation, depression is a state of the mind. Normally a healthy body will always have a healthy mind. When any sort of sickness or illness affects a person and if the treatment takes long or is not possible the person goes into depression. At such times people around a depressed person should try and cheer him up and explain the positive side of the situation. If the person is left alone then the chances of his going into deeper depression can occur. Also a tragic happening can put a person into depression - e.g. the loss of a near and dear one. Insecurity in life is another reason for depression. The best way to get out of depression is to try and find a positive point for the event and realise that the situation may have arisen through the wish of the Lord. He would be wanting to test you and if you turn to Him and place yourself in His hands He will get you out much faster than you think.

There could be alot of reasons for it. One could be that it's more socially acceptable to not hide you have depression or another mental illness. People are not shunned and in some social circles(i.e goth) it actually makes you more popular. Another could be because we seem to have a pill for everything that ails us in the world and sometimes people are misdiagnosed. And yet another reason could just be people are plain depressed, which can you blame them? We dont live in the nicest of times, people arent quiet as poliete anymore, we have to work much harder to make ends meet, etc.

Because life is not fair. It seems like the more innovative we get & figure out how we should have been raised or treated we realize that we were actually really fucced in life. That is when depression sets in! I suppose the first step to solving anything is creating acceptance of the situation you are in, and then start loving your life from today on.....I don't know depressed myself!

Every human being compares him/her with others. When he feels he has not been bestowed with luck, he feels depressed. But in an analytical way, one should intrepret, and is the frustration model. When there is an obstacle in the way of reaching goal, people with lesser effort, tend not to analyse and overcome the obstacle. Successful compensate for their weakness and overcome the obstacle in the way. Others withdraw from the obstacle feeling they cannot overcome or compensate their weakness. Thus get depressed due to withdrawal syndrome.

I don't think that there are more people now than any other time that really suffer. I just think that there are more willing Dr.s to provide meds for it now. I know a lot of people that are on antidepressants. It seems people just don't want to deal with life anymore.

I believe it is because of stress...
...from work
...school
...family
...friends/peers
...life situation
A depressed mood is generally situational and reactive, and associated with grief, loss, or a major social transition. A change of residence, marriage, divorce, the break-up of a significant relationship, graduation, or job loss are all examples of instances that might trigger a depressed mood.
