The first point to bear in mind is that the crisis did not truly
begin with the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah's Operation True Promise. The kidnappings presented a serious problem for Israel, but could not, by themselves, define the geopolitical issue. That definition came when Hezbollah rockets struck Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, on July 13. There were also claims coming from Hezbollah, and confirmed by Israeli officials, that Hezbollah had missiles available that could reach Tel Aviv. Israel's population is concentrated in the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem corridor and in the Tel Aviv-Haifa corridor. In effect, Hezbollah had attained the ability to strike at the Israeli heartland. Hezbollah has been hitting the northern part of this heartland, as well as pounding Israel's northern frontier.

Formerly, Syria had troops in Lebanon. When Syria withdrew its troops Hezbollah could operate freely.

Israel has sent special forces troops into Lebanon to ferret out strongholds and weapons. Many of these are located in tunnels. Israel may send tanks. On Beirut Al-Manar TV Lebanese President Emile Lahhud expressed his support for Hezbollah leader, Al-Sayyid [Hasan] Nasrallah. It seems likely that the Lebanese will commit their army to assist Hezbollah against Israel.

Hezbollah has indicated that it will bombard Tel-Aviv, Israel with 500 missiles. So far, Hezbollah has used Kassam and Ketuysha rockets. It has not used the Zelzal or Fajr missiles, yet which have longer range. Israel is committed to ferreting out the missiles and destroying them. This will be costly to both sides in casualties.

It seems that Hezbollah wants to maximize civilian casualties on both sides. Hezbollah deliberately operates military wings out of densely populated areas. In addition, Israeli civilian casualties are maximized when Hezbollah launches antipersonnel missiles designed by Syria and Iran with ball-bearing shrapnel.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said on MEMRI TV the volcano of rage of the people in the region is on the brink of eruption...it will not be limited to this region.

Early in the morning on July 21st IDF ground forces were operating in the area of the Karni crossing in the northern Gaza Strip. In a military engagement just over the border of Lebanon Israeli soldiers of the Egoz regiment discovered one of the many fortified bunkers holding the large arsenal of missiles currently raining upon Israeli towns in the North. The United Nations has called for a ceasefire and wishes to oversee the peace.

Actually the UN's charter of Isreal as a sovereign nation in 1948.

What started the last fracas was Hezbollah's incursion in to Isreal's borders and the kidnapping of two soldiers and killing of eight others in the process.

Since Syria (Hezbollah's biggest backer) pulled out of Lebanon earlier this year Hezbollah probably felt their influence was waining and had to do something to show they were still a factor in the struggle to destroy Israel.

The a violent reaction from Isreal was to be expected. Isreal got forceful when Hamas did they same thing in the Gaza Strip area. But I doubt this much violence was counted on. The missiles that hit Haifa and the Israeli ship prove Hezbollah has the backing of not only Syria but Iran as well. Is it any wonder the US doesn't want Iran to have a nuke?

I may not agree with Israel having a nuke but with Iran backing terrorist organizations and giving them training and weapons I definitly don't even want to consider the possibility Iran could give a nuke to a terrorist group.

Some say it started after WWII and the division of Palestine, but I think it started before then. I think it started when Great Britain and France divided up the land they controlled after World War I without much attention to tribal or cultural distinctions. They put people into one country who should have been in 3 or 4 or more different countries. They reserved a portion to be the Jewish homeland. Jews had been immigrating into the area since the 1880's. So, this question is like the question, "When does life begin, at conception or birth?" By the time shooting starts, the conflict is well under way.

surely Israel isn't struggling with with Lebanon. that is making an attempt to root out the islamic militants/terrorists who function from there. it all started even as some Israeli infantrymen were abducted and Israel insisted they be released. That only wasn't going to ensue and issues exploded. regrettably there have been a tremendous kind of civilians stuck up interior the drama. So what's new?
