The time clock was instituted to put a limit on how long games could last. In the past, grandmasters were known to wait hours between moves. Supposedly, they were studying the strategy, but in all likelyhood they were attempting to make their opponent forget what was going on on the board.

To counter this, each player is given a certain amount of time in which to make all of his moves. The actual time varies depending on the rules of the particular match. When he strikes the clock, his time stops running, and his opponent's time starts. If a player runs out of time before the game is over, he automatically forfeits the game.

The clock very seldom factors into actual gameplay (unless you're playing "speed chess"), as each player is alloted ample time to complete the game. It's just there to keep players from using dirty psychological tricks to win, rather than winning on the strength of their game.

The time clock keeps the game moving. If you did not have it people could sit there for as long as they would like and not make a move. With the time clock each person gets a set amount of time to play the game. The clock rewards fast thinking. Hope this helps

In most cases it limits the length of the game. Each player has the same amount of time to make a set number of moves or complete the game. In competition it allows for rounds with start/stop times that are predictable. For the player it adds another element of excitement to the game. Sometimes its hard to remember your opponent is across the board from you not the clock.

It measures the time on a time limited game. Each player gets an x amount of time to play all their moves in - hence the clock. It can be any amount of time you like.

Because in competition play, the game is timed. The speed chess games have the time set way down to force you to move quickly.

Each move is timed. The clock tells you how much time you have left to make the move.
