Ocean Beach is a world to itself. I worked there about 6 years ago and my first day at work I parked my car in the employee parking lot (right off the main street of Newport) and there was a homeless man sleeping there :( Then the next day for lunch I went to eat at a tiny sandwich place and someone had there HUGE dog (and I love dogs) in there, which honestly grossed me out bcuz we were all eating. So it took A LONG time for me to get used to Ocean Beach (I'm more a La Jolla girl) but then I started to love it.

The people there are sooo nice, it's like there own little world. You can find all kinds of "eclectic" people...you will find musicians, vegans, homeless, surfers...everywhere. OB tried to keep its stores "small" and fought HARD to keep a Starbucks out of there, but Starbucks won. It's still a very quaint town..the main street has antique stores all along it, with places to eat and even a hostel where you can meet lots of young people from many places.

There's one part of OB that people live that everyone knows that there's quite a bit of drugs and yet you can walk up the hill to Point Loma and there all rich!!! Also, you can go down Sunset Cliff Boulevard and see beautiful coastline of beach!! The OB pier is a great place to fish from.

So basically, OB has everything, it is a place I think you have to get used to, but once your "open" to it, you'll love it.

You have to be a certain type to appreciate OB. It's still where hippies of the 90' s and oo's go. The people are very cool, it isn't as "pristine" as other beaches in San Diego (read white bread ASP) , but gives so much more in real humanity. Don't get me wrong it's still clean, but you'll get rastafarians playing on the beach or girls and guys looking like James Taylor And Carly singing together. But I lived very near OB and that's where my kids learned to surf and learned tolerence and ultimately learned that really peace is the way. (If you can read between the lines I'm saying you won't be comfortable if you have a VOTE 4 Bush bumper sticker on your car!) The OB hotel is quite nice, clean and the staff ias great. If you're thinking of living there I think you can go to the Ocean Beach Hotel website and it shows a camera on the surf and the street. If not let me know. I personally think nothing is better than breakfast at Tower II - or up Newport at Magaritas. And Hodads - Best burger in San Diego!!

OB is about as unpretentious as San Diego beach living gets. Sunny days are punctuated with the occasional jet roaring overhead, the barking of happy dogs partying at Dog Beach, waves pounding the coastline of Sunset Cliffs. It's a place where Halloween and New Year's Eve are high holy days, and the O.B. Chili Cook Off, the Christmas Parade, and the 4th of July fireworks show are annual traditions.

In many ways, it's kind of a quiet sleepy place that time forgot. It's one of the few places left in San Diego (or the rest of the country for that matter) where the shops are locally owned and managed, and there isn't a Baby Gap and a Pottery Barn on every corner. Well, at least not yet. A few years ago Starbucks moved in, and it caused quite a controversy. Many communities would welcome a Starbucks - it means gentrification. For OBecians, it means homogenization, something that for the most part has not taken firm root in our beloved little community.

Basic Training of the Puppy - Read here https://tr.im/BNwiW

The new puppy is certainly one of the most adorable and cuddly creatures that has ever been created. It is the most natural thing in the world to shower it with love and affection. However, at the same time it is important to realize that if you want to have a well trained adult dog, you need to begin the training process right away. The dog, like its related ancestor, the wolf, is a pack animal. One of the features of a pack is that it has a single dominant leader. Your new puppy is going to want that leader to be you, but if you do not assume that role from the very beginning, the puppy’s instincts will push him to become the leader.

The most important thing to remember about training the puppy during its first six months of life is that it must see you as the leader of the family pack. The essential thing is gaining the trust and the respect of the puppy from the beginning. You will not do this by allowing the puppy to do whatever it wants to do whenever it wants to do it. On the other hand, a certain amount of patience is required. Most people err in their early training by going to extremes one way or the other. Although you need to begin the basic training process at once, you can not expect your dog to do too much at first. Basic obedience training is fine and should include simple commands like sit, stay, and come. Remember that trying to teach the dog advanced obedience techniques when it is a puppy is much like trying to teach a five year old child algebra.

It is also important to restrain from cruel or abusive treatment of the puppy. You can not beat obedience into your dog, and it certainly is not going to engender feeling of respect and trust. House breaking is an area where this usually becomes a problem because of the anger that is triggered when the puppy fails and creates a mess inside the home. Although this issue must be addressed without anger, it most be addressed. If you allow the puppy to eliminate inside the house, it will continue to do so as an adult dog. The same thing is true of other destructive or dangerous behavior such as chewing and biting. Do not expect the puppy to grow out of it. You are going to need to train the puppy out of it, but you should do so firmly but with a sense of play and fun using positive reinforcement and lots of love and praise for good behavior.

As a british girl I loved OB, great relaxed atmosphere, lovely community, fond memories. Hodads, just back from the beach (on Newport I think) does the BEST burgers!

Lovely, unique little beach community. I highly recommend Nati's for Mexican food. It's located on Bacon Street.
