It is not always a sign of being dirty, in many countries it is perfectly normal, get a spray from the supermarket and use in all the nooks and crannies, and make sure you dont leave any food around, no crumbs etc, and store opened food items in containers

I also found a cockroach in my kitchen. This was when I came down in the middle of the night, that is the time to check for them.
Go in when the kitchen is dark, (cos that's when they come out), put the light on, and then watch for a few minutes.
If you have any, they will stay in a shadowy place for a short time, then try to make their way back to their nest and you will see them.
If you do this for a couple of nights running and see none, then you can be relatively sure that it just wandered in.
If you do see any more, kill them.
Ignore the horror stories or you will never get to sleep.
They are quite easy to get rid of, you can buy stuff for that purpose from most hardware shops, some of the larger supermarkets stock it too.
Don't recall the name of the stuff, but it has a picture of cockroaches on the front, so it's easy to identify.

They love paper and warm dark wet places - check any pile of old newspapers, cardboard, clean everything -- the cutlery drawer, the cupboards, check/clean under the sink for drips, and behind the fridge and in the bathroom. Also, they can get into your clothes and books and come with you when you move. If you find you are getting a lot of them, you would do well to wash all your clothes in hot water and seal them in plastic garment containers.

If you saw one, there will be a nest somewhere - it may be in the walls, in the next apartment. But you have to do everything you can to get rid of them. Get some roach traps and set them out immediately. Then call the exterminator, but the bottom line is that an exterminator will only kill the adults - he won't necessarily get their eggs - and you'll have to call him back. To get rid of the eggs, thoroughly wash the kitchen, bathroom and all the baseboards - where they like to run along, with bleach. Seal your food, especially anything like bread, crisps, biscuits, in tight containers -- don't keep anything out that comes in a cardboard box (cereal etc.). Buy liquid soap for your bathroom, not bar soap, as they eat bar soap. Steam clean your rugs - etc etc etc. The absolute best non toxic roach killer which you should use (on top of the poisons and everything else) is Insectigone (link below). It is a special kind of very fine earth that gets into their little joints and makes it impossible for them to move. Once you've cleaned everything and sealed everything, put out the traps, called the exterminator, sprinkle Insectigone along the cracks in the rooms, behind the fridge, in cracks under the sink, anywhere you think they might like to run along en route to eating your food.

This may sound over the top, but believe me, you can't get over the top enough with cockroaches.

It could have come from anywhere. It's not a sign that your home is dirty. Get something immediately or there will be lots more of them. I keep roach traps in my kitchen and bathrooms all the time. You can spray for them, but I like the traps, no yucky smell. Also if you have pets, and you spray, you have to make sure you cover their food dishes and put them in a different room or even out of the house while you fumigate. The traps eliminate this problem as well.

Cockroaches have been around since the dinosaurs. They can survive anything, even a nuclear bomb! They are in your house because they want to be and you don't have a choice. Make your house they don't really like. You can do this by getting rid of paper products laying around, such as stacks of newspapers and paper bags. Also, don't leave any food out. Store all opened pantry supplies in tightly sealed containers. You can also spray, which will help some but not completely. You can't get rid of them, but you can make your house less boring.

There is a chance you could have more but if you did they would be somewhere like behind the fridge or in the vents, they especially love places where there is water like drains or leaking/dripping pipework.
Check these places and then check your furniture, they love those too.
If you have found none then it's likely it's a one off.
The heat brings them out more specially so if you have trees near you. I live in the countryside & suffered with these yucky things last year but luckily I've been ok so far, but gonna go check all the places I've just mentioned, just in case lol

Though your kitchen is clean enough coackroachs can spread from any other place to kitchen. They love dark places and finds them very soon with their imaginary sence, and move to those places.

They are never alone hun; always in packs - much like those hoodies on the street corner.

Probably came in from a drain or a hole in your wall (check around pipes).

I was once told by a surgeon about Cockroaches laying eggs in your ear as you sleep. Apparently its a hell of an operation to remove the eggs and if ANY hatch ............ well you dont want to know.

My point is: KILL THEM, KILL THEM ALL !!!!
