Free safety

Listen to Warrior. But, I would say Defensive End. This is why. If you're not that good a runner (speed and agility) strong safety isn't going to work. Strong safety needs side to side speed and the ability to quickly react to the ball.

Tight end...at your age you got the heigth, but weight may be a question. Do you like to get hit? Do you like to block? How's your hands, can you catch?

I started at defensive end. You need a brain and the ability to know when to stay home or go for the ball. The defensive ends job is to keep the play from getting outside. He turns the runner in so the linebackers can pick up the tackle. I think you have the height to play there, you don't need great speed, and its the perfect place for someone to learn.

Once you learn the game then think about other positions. Utimately, your coach will tell you where to play.

Good luck!

I think the down lineman on the defensive side is a good choice, probably end rather than tackle. I've also seen some "average runners" have success at linebacker if they could offset their lack of speed with ability to read a play and strength to shed blockers and get to the ball.

I would recommend staying away from tight end. In my somewhat limited experience, there are probably 4-6 other kids with similar build and speed who will want to try out for tight end. Look at playing tackle or quick guard on the offensive line. If you can learn the position technique well, "average speed" may be all you need to take on guys who are bigger than you.

You have a lot of great answers to choose from...I would caution against a Tight end position or back field...behind the quarterback.

Defensively, down lineman is a great place to start.
You can learn good skills at that position.

No way should you play linebacker or anything in the secondary until you are quick and agile.

I saw defensive end in the suggestions, and that would be another look. You're going to need some sense of toughness as you'll be hammering fullbacks all day in your efforts to keep a quarterback contained.

So My call would be in this order...
Defensive line (Tackle or noseguard)
Defensive End
Quarterback.

Good luck

you have some height and your weight isn't too shabby either. I seriously suggest going into a tight-end or defensive end position, the height will be a huge advantage for either of these and they don't require top-notch speed. Plus, as a tight end you might even see the ball in your hands every once in a while. Good luck to you.

ADDED** I'm noticing a lot of people saying quarterback and defensive back. If you are just an average runner as you say then db would not be good for you. I'm assuming if you have arm skills you would have mentioned them, if you feel you can play qb well, then your attributes would indeed match well for a pocket qb(meaning you won't be scrambling much).

I still believe that you would be best as a tight end or defensive end, you may end up finding that as an interior lineman your height and weight combination could serve as a disadvantage, as the stockier and quicker kids will excel here. being tall and on the outside will enable you to control that outside. Your longer steps will enable you to influence the blocker or blockee to where you want him and your long reach will only add to your control, excellent for containment. blistering speed isn,t required for either of these, they are both very intellectual positons that require control of your thoughts and body to be able to make quick decisions.

as an added bonus for tight-ends, they are commonly used for passing in lower grade levels as the qb's usually havent developed their arms enough to get the ball deep or to the flats

If you don't have a preference between offense and defense then I'll give you suggestions for both.

You are tall for your age but relatively thin. On defense, I would suggest defensive end. I think as an average runner you would have difficulty playing corner or safety as running with wide receivers would be hard. Defensive end wouldn't have you immediatlely in the line of fire of shorter and stockier defensive tackles - the key to blocking is staying lower than your opponent and it would be easier for them to get lower than you.

On offense - if you can catch, try for tight end. It would also help b/c as a tight end you would be blocking the defensive end. The better you understand how to block a defensive end...the better (when on defense) you can keep a tight end from blocking you.

As a thirteen year old, I was about that height and weight. I played TE and was the main receiver of the team, and I played OLB. You could also be a tailback if you can run through people becuase the weights decent. If you're fast enough you could be a safety.

Offense - Fullback or Tightend
Defense - Linebacker Or Defensive Tackle..

You need speed for DB , SS, and FS - Faster guys on your team get those positions usually and your big for your age, so good stuff..See ya in the pros 1 day!

wow, you're tall and lanky. Put some weight on you boy. You sound like you could try quarterback, the position has more to do with ability than athletisicm. So you're height could bail you out there. Good luck.
