The "American Society of Home Inspectors" is a professional Association representing home inspectors across the nation. There are very few formal or required criteria for someone to be a "Home Inspector". The rub comes with liability insurance.

If an inspector provides a faulty opinions, he or she may be subject to a lawsuit based on negligence. Today, homeowners are a savvy bunch, and mostly look for "certified" home inspectors. Insurance companies will only provide liability coverage to "certified" inspectors. Hence the "American Society of Home Inspectors". They seem to set the standards for their members and represent them collectively. They seek to establish minimum standards of education and experience, backed up by testing.
