#1. We are not spending "trillions" on war. The entire camapign for World War II cost two trillion dollars. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan doesn't even come close to such a number; but it would still be worth it if it did.
#2. The poverty line is an arbitrary number. Fact is our people living in "poverty" have food, housing, cars, color TVs, and Internet access. Most people in this country don't even understand what real poverty is.

There is this thing called the military-industrial complex-----this is the industrial side of the supply mechanism that produces and distributes all the gear and sundries to the military for their work---this is an extremely large complex of businesses and it encompasses hundreds of companies and thousands of employess producing tens of thousands of products from explosive devices and ammunition to toilitries and office supplies--all of these businesses do better (sell more stuff) when the military is at their peak of use (at military actions)---So---and awful lot of government people and the folks THEY do business with---see war as good for business---lots of people hard at work making this stuff and getting good pay doing so-----So actually the money being spent here is what they call LOOP CASH---they pay out revenues from the taxes they've collected to the business that produce this stuff---the business do well and the people working there do well and then they in turn pay taxes on what they've earned and around it goes again-------
So--when people who are in power see the economics are in a slump---and they can't figure out anything better ---they just simply return to this tried and true way of spuring the economy--war---or at least heavy military activity----the factories start pumping out the stuff---they hire lots of people---everyone gets paid---and in turn they pay their taxes and here we go again
And to the people who see things this way---all this business and all the people working and the false numbers that it produces on the true picture of the economy--IS A MOVE TO LESSEN THE EFFECTS OF POVERTY----as well as good politically ---because it's just down right patriotic as hell to be somewhere killing those anti-american dudes---people love that and people get elected that support us being somewhere killing all those anti-american dudes

Because unfortunately we have elected officials who are very greedy and self serving who lie to the public about their intentions and motives. Sad and pitiful. And EVIL to say the least. I can't stand it. Most Americans disagree with what is going on but we have the crazy S#!^ called "the electoral college" that in my opinion assures that the feelings and thoughts of "most Americans" don't get served, only a select group truly effects the politics and choices of this confused nation.

Besidesthere is always money for war, but helping cure poverty would be "socialism" and handouts.

Because if the country is not defended it will cease to exist, and won't be able to help anyone. That's the theory.
America spends billions on social programs as well as spending on defense.

Most of those people living in poverty would still live in poverty even if we gave them whatever they wanted... when homeless guys ask me for money (for food)... if I give them money they dont spend it on food... they buy drugs.

it is exactly as eisenhower warned as he left office of the military industrial complex. the collusion between politics, big business, and defense, where essentially, war becomes business. also known as the iron triangle. if you'd like to see how it works, visit www.informationclearinghouse.info and watch the documentary 'why we fight' about eisenhower's warnings and how they've manifested today.
