The violin is very difficult to learn, especially if you do not have a musical background or any experience. If you have experience with stringed instruments, it's a little easier to grasp the basic concepts of the violin. The biggest challenge that the violin presents (apart from the way you must hold it) is the lack of frets, which are those little steel bars the run vertically (that can be found on a guitar) down the neck. Frets help in the "forgiveness" of a guitar, but since the violin lacks frets, you must have your fingers at PRECISELY the right place ALL the time...Otherwise, you will be out of tune.
The interesting thing is that being slightly out of tune isn't always a bad thing with violin music, so there's a layer of complexity there that you won't find with fretted instruments.
My suggestion is to start with a beginner's book, maybe a Mel Bay's Learner Book or something like that to get a good foundation. And seek a local teacher!

It's easy to learn the basic things for violin but it is incredibly hard to master.
