If you are talking about YIM (messenger) got to 'Messenger' menu and select "My Status" and then "New Status Message", type a new message in dialog box and click ok button to see your customer status message.

Under yahoo? Open messenger... Open status... click new status and it will let you put in your own status or right click on the icon and thing will pop up and under show messenger is the word status click on the arrow on that and the same thing as before. I hope that helps a little

Assuming you talk about MSN Messenger... you can download a software called Messenger Plus. It is a patch for the original MSN Messenger which adds really cool features like personalized status messages, automated messages, ability to send personalized sounds during conversations (my personal favorite), ability to color your nickname, etc. You can get it for free at www.msgplus.net

just click on custom or new status and type it in.it will save for future use on its own
