Gmail came up with the different method for account opening. It was possible thru invitations only. Any of your friend got gmail account and he is regularly using it for mailing purpose then he must be having enough invitations to invite his friends. As much you use gmail account, you will get more invitations. It will be accumulated into your account.

Right now, google allows users with mobile phones to use them to sign up for a gmail account. You input your mobile phone number to google during signup, and they SMS you an activation code. Each mobile number can only be used once, so prevents people from opening multiple accounts (for the most part)
