It's absinthe, absolutely, but not just fairies ... demons, and bugs and whatever else your fancy can conjur. The active ingredient is "wormwood" (which has been removed from absinthe available in the US, BTW). The "wormwood content" varies from brand to brand, and the higher it is, the more potent the absinthe. Enough and you poison yourself. Just a bit less and you hallucinate.
Marvelous! Try searching "wormwood" for the effects of this botanical on the human brain.

Absinthe, a pale green liqueur that has a very high alcohol content, usually 70%+ if i'm correct. Flavoured with aniseed and wormwood and becomes cloudy when water is added. Also drank with sugar, I believe.
Wormwood's effects can be harmful, so substitute ingredients are used. What they are though i have no idea.
drink enough, i'd imagine you'd see more than mythical creatures.

wormwood is certainly psychotropic. just chewing a few leaves from a wildplant will tamper with your sense of vision (though not in a distressing or dangerous way).
wormwood is a crucial ingredient in true absinthes - but is almost absent from many commercial absinth ersatzes (particularly in the us).
hill's absinth contains sufficient wormwood to be psycho-active - but you'd be better advised to take the herb neat (it is also medicinal in sensible doses).

Corn likker......me and my cousin Billy Ray were drinkin' that corn likker one night purty hard....gettin' drunker than ole' Cooter Brown...when Billy Ray falls off the porch cuz he says there was something flyin' close to his head. Well, I reckon it must've been a big skeeter or one of them thar fireflies....but as I took another swaller I noticed it too. I'll be dadgummed if it weren't one of them fairie things (and wearin' a might purty dress too!).
Well, Billy Ray and I checked into one of them fancy rehab places we've heard about....I think it was the wife of that auto maker...Betty Ford.
After we done laid off the corn likker, we ain't never seen nothin' like that again!

You don't need anything to see fairies. They are all around you. When they want to be seen they will let you know!
