How about asking her for her help while you're gone? You have to bring it up, no way around it right? So, tell her you're going away for a little break with fam, could she please watch the house, bring in the mail, water the plants, etc? It's a nice way of telling her she can't come, but also makes her feel needed.

Ask her to keep an eye on your house while you are on vacation. I did this with my mother in law because she wanted to meet us at Disney since we were driving but we explained that we really needed someone to watch the house and our cats so she stayed behind and did that for us.

To tell you the truth,it would probably be better for your wife to explain to her that this is family time.As hard as it is for some parents to accept...when their children start their own families,they are not a main part of it.Not trying to be mean,that's just the way it is.
