i like the "classic "on the corner of "luong ngoc quen" street in the "old city" walking distance of "ho hoan kim" [hoan kim lake]... down at the lake is a resturant .. all lit up at night, you cant miss it. it is on the south east corner of the lake opposite of the famous water puppet theather... make dinner reservations and eat there at least once...best place in ha noi to eat! stay away fron water puppets unless you're looking for a good place to nap. shop till you drop in the day time, go to "quen van ming's jazz club"[ just ask at your hotel desk] to finnish your evening. bier hoi on the street corner is always fun to do[ cheap tap bere right out on the street [ you'll see it , join in] an overnight trip to mai chau is valley well worth it.../ and sapa if you have 3-4 days... if you like italian food resturaunt "34" "caty corner" from the classic is the place to go .. have a glass off da lat red wine before your meal

Hanoi is inexpensive and there are all sorts of three story walk ups near West Lake and that is the part of the city where you would want to stay. When I travel it's air only and it always works out best for me that way. The taxi drivers at the air port or even on the streets will take you to a place to check out. We found the accomodations to be more than acceptable and for between $12 and $18 dollars a night you just can't go wrong.

If you wait to find accomodations when you get there, at least you can check out the rooms to see if they are up to your standards and negotiate the rate.

As far as things to do. Check out the old quarter where all the streets are named after the trade that is on that street. it's really neat.

The best though is watching the ballet on wheels. There are no stop signs or traffic lights and no one stops. It's fun just to watch that and of course being in the middle of it when you do work up the courage to cross the street.

There is also the "Hanoi hilton" the french prison turned into a museum that is a must see. The military museum and the Ho Chi Min Museum.

Early in the morning walk around West lake and see the city come to life. Ladies in the park doing their morning excersises and men jogging, the loud speakers start blaring just before seven in Vietnamese of course so I can only assume that it's the news, weather and propaganda. And then the traffic starts.....

Ther is no night life in Hanoi. Everything shuts down well before midnight. The food is great and its quite cosmopolitan. You can find what ever you want. The fruits and breads that are sold on the street are fantastic.

Please book a trip to Ha long Bay. No visit to North Vietnam would be complete without seeing this wonder of the world. You can book at the hotel and it's only about 30-45 dollars for a three day trip. Food accomodation and transportation included.

Have fun. The place is amazing!
