They made it big for the winning combination of Pop and Philly soul, very hard to screw up.

The band name is the the lead singer and the short dark haired guitarist with the mustasche last names. No it's not stupid. It was the start of the video era. All 80's bands were new to the concept of video and so you have all 80's videos looking cheesy but that doesn't matter. The music was ever so awesome and unforgettable. Mtv was great back then. I think you have an ignorant opinion. Daryl Hall, John Oats

Why do you think their names are stupid? Why do you listen to them if you don't like their names? I thought they were good for their time and still good today. Huey Lewis was good, too. Chill out and just let them sing. By the way, it's OATES, not OATS.

I like them. They had some good music. They used their last names, its not like they made up a duo name! Daryl Hall and John Oates. Not cheesy to me.

As others say, they just used their last names. They're Daryl Hall and John Oates.

Well they thought of the name Hall and Oatmeal and Hall and Oats sounded better.

I think they defaulted to obvious band names & didn't put too much thought into it. Check out their prior band names while they attended Temple University:

The Temptones (Hall)
The Masters (Oates)

'Nuff said !

Name doesnt matter, they were cheesy but they had tunes. None of the bands these days have any tunes at all.
