Yes, they most certainly can. Many spidrs are not well adapted to live in water, their body shape and proportions i.e. large abdomen make it very difficult for them to stay afloat. Many spiders in the family Pisauridae can swim very well and will actually dive in search of minnows and tadpoles. They are very well adapted to the life aquatic. They ahve waterproof hairs on the body, and well adapted hairs on the feet that allow them to skate on the surface and swim quickly down below.
Spiders must breath atmospheric oxygen, even those adapted to live in the water. The have what are called book lungs, and these lungs passively take in oxygen. If they were help under water for too long, they would eventually take on water and would die.
But please dotn try to drown any, just take my word for it that it works.......haha I hope that answers your question!

I noticed a large "drowned" spider in a large bowl of water in my conservatory. 3 days later I remembered it was there and went to throw water and "dead" spider onto the lawn. When the water moved, the spider curled up. After a few moments it spread itself out again. Once on the lawn it disappeared, hopefully having had a lucky escape.
Why are you all so cruel? If I find a spider on my floor or wall, I put a glass over it and a postcard under it and put it outside.

Some float and some sink. It all depends on the species of spiders. See because some/most spiders, have long, high hollow legs, that help them float on the surface of water, but if forced down.....they can drown.

It depends on the sp. There are other spiders that walk on water, other live under water inside a bubble. But house spiders do drown:) Why on earth did you ask?:p

Although they can walk on water they can drown because they can't breath underwater. As long as they don't get to the top of the water they will die.

Tip - Try pouring some bleach on them

Oh yes. Problem is they float really easily and grab onto plugholes.

Why would you want to drown one though? It's not like they have a strong shell that prevents you stamping/whacking them.

Yes they can. As a little girl, I love bugs, I remember putting a lady bug in a cup of water and force it to suberge. It drowned and I cried!
