You round the last number, in this case 2 so that goes to '0'. Then get the next number from the right which rounds up and keep doing this until you have reached the digit you need. Or you could just look at the digit after the number you need (7) and round up the next number giving 1.46. The book wins again.

It can be rounded in two forms.

1) 1.45768982 x 10^3 = 1457.68982 = 1457.69

2) 1.46 x 10^3 (thats 2 decimal places)

The first is more accurate.

1.46
When you round off a number, you try to keep it as close to the original number as possible. So you would never round the last TWO numbers. You only round the last number.

Think of it this way. If you went into a gas station to purchase some gas, and the total came to $1.457. Since you can not pay 1/10 of a penny, the pump would round it off. What you want to pay for $1.457 worth of gas?
$1.46 or $1.58?
Hopefully the pump is not going to add another 12 cents on to you bill, to cover 7/10 cents (less then a penny) you own them.
No, you would round $1.457 to the nearest penny - $1.46.

So 1.4576892x(10)3 would round to 1.46.

My 2 cents worth...
If I were to get really picky and technical I would start rounding the first number set from the very beginning such as:
1.45768982 would first round to 1.4576898 because the two is lower than 5 so we round DOWN (2<)
Then we would continue on rounding 1.4576898 UP to just 1.457690 because the second #8 is larger than 5 (8>). The number behind the 8 was a 9 so to round UP the 9 because of the 8 gives us 10 so we have to move on past the 9 to the next 8 in the set.
Moving on naturally leads us to simply round DOWN the 0 leaving us with 1.45769 (0<)
On we go, 1.45769 rounds UP to 1.4577 (9>)
1.4577 rounds UP to 1.458 (7>)
1.458 rounds up to 1.46 (8>)
and there we have our rounded off answer to the 2nd decimal point.

NOW, for the simple answer....

If you want to round to the 2nd decimal place you use the 3RD place to determine your rounding up or down. If you wanted to round to only the 1st decimal place then you would use the 2nd place to determine your round, sooo...

for a second decimal place you would simply round 1.457 UP to 1.46 because the next decimal place (the #7) is greater than 5.

to find the round number to the first decimal place you just take the number 1.45 and round that UP to 1.5 because our second place number (5) is greater than or equal to 5.

I have no clue as to your friend comes to a conclusion that equals 1.58 There's no way, unless he's trying to round to the third place in which case his answer should be 1.458, that's the only way he can correctly have the '58' be a part of the answer.

Hope This Helps... and isn't too confusing an answer.

1.45768982 x 10^3 = 1457.68982 thus round off to become 1457.69...

but if its still in that form... it will be 1.46 x 10^3 (thats 2 decimal places)
