You would think that working for a cell phone company taking calls from customers whose teenagers have racked up hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars in bills, that I would be an advocate for no cell phones, but truly I feel that kids should have a mobile phone if they have proven themselves responsible enough to use them wisely. On top of being able to stay in touch with family, the cell phone is a wonderful way for kids to stay in touch with their friends. I do recommend an unlimited text messaging plan...You would not believe how spendy .10 a message can get when you add them all up. On the plus side, many companies offer a kid's plan. Take T-Mobile...for 19.99 a month, a parent can activate a KidConnect plan that gives 50 minutes a month, unlimited weekends, and unlimited Mobile to Mobile. The plan restricts the phone after 50 minutes so that it cannot go over, but you can charge up the minutes with pre-paid cards. It is a great way for parents to ensure that the kids are managing the minutes wisely without the gamble of a plan that allows for overage.

Advantages:
1. Surely you can better track the children.
2. They can contact you whenever in trouble
3. It boosts their self esteem
4. It makes them think that they have grown up and should be responsible for what they do.
5. They spend less time on computers(may be)
6. They feel that their parents trust them
7. Easy for the parents to know more about the child; through secretly(!) reading sms etc.
8. They can become more social.
9. Practice how to control costs.
10. Get some privacy.

I don't see any problem of children having mobiles if the mobiles are prepaid, otherwise they can blow your phone's bill.
Almost the same levels of advantage a mobile brings to an adult it brings to a child. More security because it can be used as a tool on case of emergency by asking for help or getting help since the police can find a person's location over its mobile and a communications enhancement because as the case of adults its easier to keep in contact with others and for a child an extra advantage for parents of being able to provide more freedom for their children's because its facility way of keep them on track, in special if comes with a camera built in, plus can be entertainment too because some of them comes with games and songs files storage that can be used as a Walkman.
If I had a child I would feel much safer knowing that him or her carries a mobile phone with them.

You can keep tabs on them - call them whenever - some parents have even used some advanced phones' GPS location systems, to literally track their children's movements. If you have that kind of troubled teen, where you worry they may be doing or getting into real harm, maybe that is the choice for you.

Safety.
Plenty of reasons you could use here. Lost, Staying at friends, To SMS that things are ok for mum. For mum to contact them ie "Running late to pick you up from school"
Entertainment.
Improves hand eye coordination. Beware of the "Bad for eyesight" arguement with this point though
Keep them occupied on long trips. (better on the boys than the girls though) Ha
Responsibility. Plenty of reasons here too.

If you ever want to know where they are, or when they will be home, you can find out instantly. If they need you for any reason, you are just a phone call away.

If they get lost, lose their bus fare, want to tell you they're not coming home etc. then they can. It can also be good for them to look 'normal' to their friends and good incase of an emergency. Thats about it.
