Birds and small pets should be kept in cages... if they are raised in captivity. Never take an animal fromt he wild and cage it. It could give you diseases. Actually, so can captive bred pets, but that's why it's important to know where you got them from. Reputable breeders will keep an eye on these things to lessen the damage to you and your family.
Of course, play and interaction time is totally different. If you feel that you can let your pet out of their cage and protect and keep them supervised, go ahead. There's lots of fun to be had with them.
Good luck

I have two birds, which I routinely allow outside of the cage for some flight time. It's important that whatever environment in which any animal is enclosed be spacious enough and have enough variety in it to keep the animal happy.

unless, you capture an animal/bird form the wild, these pets are already used to being caged. that is not to say that i approve. i have a pair of macaws, and to me it wasn't an option to leave these two magnificent creatures in "jail". i sectioned off an area in my living room that measures 10'x15'x9' tall. i had a glass enclosure built that houses living trees, and other vegetation. this is their "cage". but i also allow them freedom to explore the rest of my home. my macaws seem to be very well adjusted. this was the closest thing to nature that i could provide, and i knew that i had to "save" them from the small wire cages that they used to call home.

only if the cages are large, and if it's a fish or bird. fish have a memory of like 3 seconds, so they will always feel like thy are somewhere new. birds should have large cages if they are pets, but should never have their wings clipped (like in a zoo).
