Screens on the windows and doors and mosquito repellent insecticide sprayed on your skin will do the trick. As for the old time ways, a thick coating of mud all over your body will serve to keep mosquitoes from biting you. They will buzz about, but they will only attack your ears, eyes, nostrils, and mouth.
Kings of centuries would have declared war to obtain a case of "Off" brand mosquitoe repellant. Sometimes the old ways are not the best.
Good luck with your insect problem.

There are several ways to prevent mosquitoes from biting you
Wear Socks: 80% of all bites are on the ankle
Wear closed toed shoes for the same reason
Avoid Bannanas during the mosquito season: Bannanas produce a scent that mosquitoes go ape over
Avoid sugary drinks because they also attract mosquitoes
Eat citrus. Despite being sweet, citrus does not attract mosquitoes and in fact repels them
Vitamin B Complex deters mosquitoes
Garlic also deters those vampires
Use essential oils' catnip and rosemary;
Last year, several members of the Iowa State University Department of Entomology presented the results of a study on common catnip. Among their conclusions was the fact that an essential oil in catnip is 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than potent chemicals such as DEET.

Eliminate standing water in your community or at least in your neighborhood:A couple of drops of Citronella Oil, Neem Oil, or Catnip will prevent eggs from hatching.
Recycle and dispose of old tires and other containers where mosquitoes breed
Shower with unscented shampoos and laundry detergent. Strong scents attract mosquitoes.
Avoid going out in the hour after dawn and the hour before sunset. Over 80% of bites occur when the temperature is perfect for breeding in the hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset.

We've had great luck with a new method involving a bacteria that affects the larvae. If you put the bacteria pellets in nearby swamps, it greatly reduces the number of mosquitos in the yard, and doesn't poison other creatures. It persists for about 4-6 weeks.

Citronella is good. BUT, remember that mosquitoes are attracted by other floral scents, so don't wear any 'smelly' creams, perfumes or scented make-up and they will go and annoy someone who is!

My mozzy net I bought to go to Kenya works fine. And 90% proof mozzy lotion. It's that strong, it melts plastic.
