above, beyond, and before you do anything else, you need to ensure the safety of your friend. these ghastly attacks can invade their target anytime, anywhere. so safety is paramount. i wish that i could explain to you the overwhelming, all encompassing fear associated with a panic attack. the victim is not afraid of one thing in particular, but all things in general. i am assuming that your friend is on some anti-depressant. if not, they need to be. however, even a great anti-depressant won't stop the panic attacks. panic attacks fall into the category of social disorders. so in addition to a safe ant-depressant, something on the order of xanax, or adavan needs to accompany.it. the ant-depressant doesn't even begin to help for several weeks, so the xanax, et all, will also assist is this time frame. i suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, and the gift that accompanies that disorder, are panic attacks. they are not fun to have nor are they fun to watch. you are a good friend to try to help. you need to help with the safety issues, and let a doctor take it from there. no drug in the world can compare with the love shared by friends. best of luck, nancy

Encourage them to calm down, breath deeply, focus on something pleasurable. Try to get them to breath at a slow even pace. Turn off all the lights, reduce all stimuli such as music, lights, anything that might make the attack worse. And if your friend has some ativan or xanax, that would be ideal.
P.S.
Zoloft, an SSRI, will NOT work quickly! It takes up to 2 wks for this drug to get into your system and work. She/He needs some quick acting drugs.

Tell them to breath in and try to be calm and don't say anything real stupid, sometimes that makes it worse. Hold them if they need it. I have anxiety attacks, also they may if not already on medication might want to get some. I recomend zoloft, it has personally helped me alot. I couldn't leave the house because of my anxiety attacks but after I begain taking zoloft it helped so much.

Zoloft isn't a quick acting drug, but it is better for the long run. I was prescribed seriquel for urgent relief.

the best thing you can do if you know it is talk to her softly take her arm and move her to a quiet place away from crowds. then talk to her very gently and help her see she is in a safe place. tell her to breathe slowly. get her to focus on something and describe it to you or count back words from 100. then when she calms down make a plan how you will handle the situation next time. this way she feels like you are a safe person to be around that does not judge her.
