there are hundreds of the little b****ds everywhere. Why is this? Is it due to the fact that there are no wasps about? And how can I get rid of them as nowhere (I mean NOWHERE) sells fly spray or has already sold out.

there are so many flys around becuase you smell and your house is dirty... or might have something to do with the rotting corpes in your living room....
goto the hardware store they will have these little fly things its a tube and it is like a sticky thing you pull down... it will catch all the flys on there.... try cleaning your nasty house and the flys wont come back

It is just that time of year I'm afraid. Also, I have noticed that the flying ants are about and there are always loads of them. I am sure it isn't down to a dirty house as Nicoley so unkindly suggested. Another thing to try if you can't find the sprays is citronella candles - they work really well with mosquitoes, but I think they work with keeping away all kinds of bugs - you can get them at hardware stores or garden centres. If you are in the UK then try Robert Dyas or Homebase - they should stock all the stuff that has been suggested: normal fly spray, the sticky strips, electric bug zappers and the citronella candles.
Hope you get rid of them - but bear in mind, summer is just a very bug filled season and there isn't much you can do!!

Are they fruit flys or house flys? Fruit flys are attracted to ripe fruit. Sometimes we get them when our bananas start to get really ripe and soft. We keep them in a hanging fruit basket and don't have screens on all of our windows. So, they smell the sugar and fly right in when the windows are open, I'm sure.
Houseflies are also attracted to food smells. But, they tend to be attracted to nearly anything and don't seem to care if there is ripe, unopened fruit in our fruit basket. Try washing all your dishes, taking out food waste to the outside trash can every day and keep a lid on your kitchen trash can if there is anything in it that might have odors. Make sure you don't leave food scraps laying around. Even a a short time can attract them.
Also, make sure that your windows all have screens on them and that you don't leave doors open so that they can fly in. It's summertime and flies are just a part of life. If you have an usually large amount it's possible that there is something in your yard (maybe your trash or a dead animal / bird hiding under a bush or something) or in your neighborhood that is attracting them. Perhaps something in a neighbor's yard.
Try fly paper. I hear it works pretty well and it's not toxic the way that chemicals are. Besides what would you do .... wave a can of poison around your house spraying sporadically in the air hoping to catch one? You'd be lucky to get any of them and I'd imagine that you'd end up making yourself (not to mention any children or pets in the area) sick from the stuff.
Flying insects are also attracted to warmth and bright light. So, at night they will swarm around porch lights and the like. Those insect zappers use that principle to attract them with the color of light that insects like the most. Then it zaps them with electricity to kill them. So, that might work for you as well. But, of course fly paper & good old fashioned cleaning is going to be a lot cheaper than a bug zapper.
If that doesn't help try asking at your local garden center, do some research on-line or call your local health department to see if they can offer any help.

I have the daisy pictures that's meant to kill them but they don't aways go there first and die they buzz around the room then go there 3 hours later !!!!
My Dog is going nuts trying to get them .
I got a fly killer in tescos spray yesterday or ask a neighbour if they have any and borrow.
If still unable to get run around like a maniac trying to swipe the little buggers.

Visit Kangaroo Island in Australia - there's definately more there. You nearly end up slapping yourself in the face because they annoy you that much.
Those strips are good - the one's with sweet stuff on. The fly's are attracted and then stick to it and can't get off.
There's those bug zappers too - the one's with a blue light. Oh, or you could get those candles, all good!

Firstly it's too early in the year for wasps. Secondly lots of men lots of flies. Try putting bunches of mint in your house to deter the flies.

Flies lifespan cycle makes them reproduce when its warm and they die when it gets to cold. If you notice during summer there are always allot of flies and in winter you barely see them.
I'm guessing that since its allot warmer and the warmth came earlier, you actually got conditions for a boom in flies.
P.S. - If you want to make a test, catch a flie in a jar and put in the fridge, you will notice that it will go dormant pretty fast.

Flys come from poop, stinky trash, and dead things. Get rid of the source and you will get rid of the flys. Use a vacuum cleaner with a real long tube to get those pesky insects.

Umm, an adult fly laid a million nasty larvae into something dead or decomposing, and they've all hatched out to fly around.
Try the vacuum cleaner on the nasties!
