Recent Australian Western 'The Proposition' is an absolute cracker. Dark and dusty, and very brutal without showing much violence. You could do a lot worse.

The last modern western thet I can remember that was decent was "Wyatt Earp".Honestly,if you want to see a good western,you can't beat the classic ones,and of course the Sergio Leone "spaghetti" westerns, which pretty much launched Clint Eastwood's career,my favorite "The Good,The Bad and The Ugly"
