It's like playing marbles with big rocks, isn't it?
And why is it named curling?
Shouldn't it be called brushing (since they use brooms to brush the ice) ?

Thanx to nelliewax & gr8leaf! Great answers! I didn't mean to put the sport down, I actually like to watch it, but being from the U.S. , I don't hear a lot about it. Thanks for looking beyond my ignorange and informing me. This is precisely why I asked this question. Everyone else, thanks as well. : )

Curling is like chess for people who need more physical activity. It requires an ability to think several moves ahead as well as physical control. The brooming helps to condition the ice for maximum control but it still takes the skill of the thrower to get the proper "curl" on the stone.

curling comes from the roaring sound of the rock on the ice. (dumb, I know)

it's a strategy game.. you brush the ice and the friction decreases and the stones can be 'curled' around into position. That's why they use the brooms to control it

I watch it because it's so funny and bizarre.
Watch women's curling, they're much more emotional and talk more

like many sports (javelin etc) it was originally a military thing. wars in particularly cold places were fought by sliding rocks at the enemy. the aim was to break as many legs as possible

p.s. obviously kidding. but it raises an interesting question: how do professional curlers get started? it's not like a father takes his son out onto an ice rink all like "hey son let's throw a rock on the ice and see if we can make it stop somewhere only using brooms"..... and it's not like it's related enough to anything to be migrated into, like if you liked running and decided to become a sprinter etc.

NO, it is not like playing marbles In marbles you try and knock your opponents marbles out of the ring, in curling you try and get as many rocks closest to the center of the rings as possible. You are talking apples and oranges. Calling curling brushing would be like calling marbles, flick the round thing.

the name curling is the action that the stone takes when it's thrown, the spin causes the rock to curl like an arc down the sheet of ice because the ice has little bumps on it,called pebbles that allow the rock to move, the rocks will not move very far on flat ice.

what's the point of any game? Not quite. The stone curls on it's way down the ice.
