It simply depends on the species of fish you're looking at. In some species, males are larger or more colorful. In others, its the females that are larger. The answer is "It depends."

There might have been 1 or 2 somewhat accurate answers. Size and color may matter for some fish, but is flip flopped for different species. In the Cichlid world Males are usually larger than females or sometimes the other way around. Some fish have sex spots on their fins that indicate their sex. Guppies are always easy to identify because the male is colorful and the female is a dull grayish color. But all species have different tells and you can't just base it off the characteristics of one species.

Yeah generally females are larger, but remember two things.

Some fish can actually change sex or never produce males in the first place.

Also gender is a human term based on a persons identity. Sex is a term for animals, but thanks for being considerate of their feelings.

that doesnt mean anything. some fish are "schooling fish" and live better when there are more of them. telling gender has EVERYTHING to do with the type of fish.
this website tells how to tell the gender of several different types of fish:

In livebearers the male has a fin that resembles a penis.

With egg layers the males have longer and pointier fins.
