Apocalypse Now REDUX. Better than the original release if that is possible. Closely followed by Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Enemy at the Gates, a German film called Stalingrad, and The Great Escape.

All Quiet on the Western Front. Different from all other war films. A classic that did not glorify war but told its story in human terms. No guts and glory, just a sense of lost youth and innocence. Young men fighting wars that old men started.

Not really a war film, but it is set during the war. My favourite is The Great Escape, with Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson.

A question I often ask myself ... impossible to say but here is a list of my faves
Saving Private Ryan ... incredible opening 20 minutes, plot lets it down later on but still very powerful flim-making. New generation of camera work, built on with Band of Brothers which although not a film, surely up there with the best.
Das Boot ... best example of how atmosphere can be conveyed by filmmaking.
Platoon ... Oliver Stone at his best.
Battle of Britain ... at the time, fantastic aerial photography. Looks clunky now, great cast
Bridge too Far, the last great epic that does not rely on CGI to convey scale. Nearly the whole of the UK Parachute regiment was used for a mass drop on Salisbury Plain to recreate the drop. Great story, great cast, if let down by a slightly disjointed telling.
Longest Day, effects pretty wooden by could not fail to engage telling the story of D-Day. Surely ripe for a re-make before Saving Private Ryan sole that thunder.
