Chimneys are constructed to contain heat and draft flue gases safely outside the living space. If a part is rattling and you do not know what it is, don't use the fireplace until a chimney sweep has examined it and given you a complete evaluation of it. The chimney sweep should also cover the finer points of its use and maintenance with you. Average cost is $100-$150 per flue swept and inspected.

If your chimney isn`t screened, some varmints nest, or a bird nest might be in there, or old dry leaves trapped in a spiders web. Is there a chimney sweep fella in your town or city?if so, why not have it checked out and cleaned if not too expensive.

You may have something up past the Flute and need to have a Chimney sweep take a look at it, or maybe the Flute is loose and needs tightening...once again something a Chimneu sweep can take care of

it maybe an old nest that is a little further down the chimney, or it could be you arieal, or if your chimney is close to some guttering then it maybe some roofing felt.

I bet it is a loose damper. You can look up and see the damper yourself. It has probably rusted over the years and one end is loose. The fix will depend on how badly it is broken.
