They are called file systems, the method for storing and retrieving files on a disk. A file system defines the directory structure for keeping track of the files and the path syntax required to access them. It also defines the way files are named as well as the maximum size of a file or volume. FAT, FAT32 and NTFS are file systems used on PCs, while HFS is used on Macs. Some operating systems support several; for example, Windows 2000 can use either FAT32 or NTFS.

Those are file system used by Microsoft operating system.

NTFS used by Windows NT, 2000, XP, for me its much more reliable and much faster when it comes to formating you harddrive.

FAT32 are also used by XP etc...
FAT16 is for MSDOS based operating system, such as DOS 6.22

It's dont worry about it I would suggest for you to use NTFS if you're using or installing Windows XP.

for more detailed information about it consult a book or better yet browse Internet, try Wikipedia

The are types of filing system ... NTFS is a new technology filing system which arrange the data almost randomly in the clusters, and get them back the same way .. which is a good way to prevent hacking the system ... while in FAT "File Allocation Table" , it's more like serial arrangement

File formats , FAT being the older formats. Use FAT 32 or NTFS if at all possible, because the others place limitations on the size of your harddrive.
