Yes, in a blog, you want people to focus on what you have to say. Putting distracting designs on the page will hurt that. Also, the colors are not high-contrast colors, and the navigation is confusing. See my Myspace page for a good example of what colors to use on a blog (high-contrast colors that make it easy to read).

Keep it simple. Post good content. Don't try to dazzle people with your web design skills... make them focus on your words. Background images are almost always bad. Don't use them. Here's another site with a good discussion of web design mistakes people make all the time.

I am a professional programmer since 1983 and I've done many, many web sites. I'm suprised at how many people screw up the simplest things. Your design is better than most, but not as good as it could be.
