You have mistaken a political failure for a military one. The US military is not operating as though a war were currently under way. They are constantly restrained, directed, and controlled by the politicians who consistenty try to put a "bringing democracy to the middle-east" face on the activities in Iraq.

North Korea is an even better example in that the US military has had little role in interacting with them. The failure to properly deal with the insanity there is grounded in the absurd gaming that goes on between the participants of those ill-fated six-party talks.

In both these cases it is the lack of will on the part of the politicians to back up their threats and rhetoric with decisive military action. In light of this lack of action, why would North Korea or Iran believe that they should tread lightly or reverse their course?

In any case, I would assert that the US does have the most powerful military in the world, but it may never have the will to use this capability again.

Because they are uneducated.
Sure, the U.S. ranks up there in the top five as the most powerful military in the world. But being dumb in the face of a war, can knock them off their pedestal really fast.

If they are so powerful... why do they have so much trouble defeating enemies that have no military power? And seem to have difficulty ending even the simplest of wars?

Anyone who thinks that America can defeat any country in the world militarily, are a little self-effacing and uneducated. Just look at the previous wars that the U.S. has fought, and tell me whether or not they are all big and almighty.

America ALWAYS needs the help from other countries to get the job done. On their own, they are just fooling themselves.

The reason why the U.S. is not doing so good in the Iraqi war, is the fact that most supporting countries have withdrawed their military support, after they found out that there was no solid proof of WMD's in Iraq.
They did not want to support or be heavily involved in an on-going lie.

The only reason you seem so powerful is because you spend shitloads of money on defence technologies (enough in fact to solve all the problems of world poverty which lead to armed violence if you wanted to direct the money appropriately) and have all the latest equipment and loads of it.

I am from New Zealand. We fought alongside Americans in several wars. My Great Uncle once told me that WW2 was a nice safe war until the Americans joined in. They had trouble distinguishing between allies and enemies. These days its called "friendly fire."
The American soldiers are a running joke with most other soldiers.

Put bluntly, the US has never had a great reputation as warriors. It tends to win these days by bombing the crap out of everything from a great height or distance. Which is where the power comes from. So as long as you have most of the best weapons, you will win. But you'd never win a war on equal terms. But I think you know that already which is why you asked the question.

Its refreshing to read an American opinion which is well considered and more in line with reality. There is way too much jingoistic drivel posted on these pages.

Cheers

Because it is a fact that the US is the most powerful.
And it is not even a close sompetition. Look up the definition of super power. Understand why there is only one in the world right now.

American Military power is unrivaled for several reasons.

Superior firepower on a tactical level, complete air superiority in combat and reconnaissance, and Navy battle groups that can take the fight to any region of the world and fight as if they have home-field advantage, and superior satellite technology.

When the gloves come off, and the military sets to the task of destroying enemies and their infrastructure, it is pathetically easy for the US to attack with impunity.

The only problem the military has is trying to LIMIT civilian casualties and collateral damage. How many soldiers were lost defeating Saddam's forces? Barely any.

The 2500+ dead are from trying too hard to be police men and army trainers for Iraqi's. Noble enough work i suppose, but not to be confused with what these men and women really excel at.

NOBODY on Earth want to fight the US in a REAL war.

for the same reason that most Americans think "terrorists want to attack us because they hate our freedom" and that experiencing international cuisine is eating McDonalds in a foreign airport. They think these things because they have never opened their eyes and looked at anything except what they see shown on CNN or Fox news, so they assume that's all there is. Sad. America has not won a war in more than 60 years (despite claims made by spin doctors and fork-tongued politicians), but that does not stop the miltary from using planes and bombs to make life a living hell for lots of people in and out of the USA

They do have the mostpowerful military in the world. The most advanced weapons and soliders. They have 11 carrier battlegroups just as many as the rest of the world. They have great tanks, trucks, planess and subs. diffently the best out there. They did great in iraq too. kicked the crap out of the iraq army and it took them no time at all. but know they are occuppying a country and that is hard to do. history has shown that. But say they attacked N Korea. the US would destroy them. They have the power to defeat any other army in the world i believe. But in iraq they dont really know who they are fighting. regular people are attacking them, they dont have set bases to attack. so its harder to destroy the enemy.

the US has the best military in the world. The US is not doing very good in handling the North Korea and Iraq situation is because of the strategies employed.

lets see who else has 12 carrier battle groups each carrier having more planes than 90%of the rest of the worlds air force?or like 4000 planes in the airforce or as many icbm laden subs? oh and like another 80000 marines . and yes nk fears us thats what driving their brinksmanship. when you are an elephant thier is really no need to fear the jackals caus they know and you do what happens when we get really mad we have not been mad yet just annoyed and anoyed elephants are still very dangerous ask saddam. imagine if we get mad that would be a rampage then would it not.

, We probably do have the most powerful; military however there's a cost. For example we have spent 300 billion dollars in Iraq so far. According to the US government we have killed 30 thousand enemy combatants so far. That is a cost of 10 million dollars per kill. Of course it doesn't really cost that much but assessed in a business sense it would remain true. Now lets analyze on a "bang for the buck" basis. In Vietnam we spent 100,000 dollars to kill each NVA adjusted for inflation in today's dollars about 1,000,000 dollars per kill. In Vietnam a little over 2 million troops served in the course of the war with losses of 58,200.In Iraq with a little over 1 million troops having served they have lost about 2500 soldiers. On a loss per million served basis ten times more men were lost in Vietnam. In Iraq 30,000 enemy combatants have been killed (us gov.). In Vietnam 3 million NVA were killed, approximately 50 times more killing per soldier served.
What does this all say?
It says the cost of each kill has increased ten fold while the efficiency of the military at killing has dropped since Vietnam.
