I would skip the bananabar.
The Rijksmuseum is filled with Dutch 17 century paintings. Ten euro it costs. The Stedelijk Museum (these days situated near Central Station in Amsterdam) is the best in contemporary art. The Stedelijk costs nine euro. The Van Gogh is also worthwhile. Ten euro.
Since the weather is good, the Vondelpark is a must visit and a trip on the canals is also very good.
Neighbourhoods to walk: Jordaan and de Pijp. The Pijp also has a nice market (Albert Cuyp, not on sundays) and a park (Sarphatipark).
Enjoy your stay, I do every day.

I'd skip the Bananenbar, I went a couple of years ago and it cost 40 euro just to get in, it was an extra fifty for a show and they only let you stay for an hour. The Cassa Rosso is better value and more fun - if you feel brave you can even go on stage.

The Rijksmuseum is good but is currently partially closed for refurbishment. The National History Museum is the next best one.

Others: Van Gogh Museum, Ann Frank House, Rembranthuis, Stedelijk.

If it's your first visit a canal boat trip is worthwhile. The Jordaan is a nice area to explore on foot.

The Red Light District is fun in the evening, but best avoided very late at night if you're on your own. Don't buy any street drugs, you'll be ripped off. Leidseplein at the weekend is a must!

Next to the Central Station (in the old post sort building) is the new "Stedelijk Museum", with modern art. On the highest floor, there's a café restaurant, very cool place to be.

Don't miss the Vondelpark, with the Film museum. In the Vondelpark, there's also a (free) theatre. On Saturday afternoon, there are music and theatre shows for the whole family, in the afternoon there's music and sometimes comedy. Sunday afternoons is for world music, jazz et cetera.

And go see the market on the Waterlooplein (not on Sundays).

For a quick tour through a part of the city: from Central Station take the tram (1, 2 or 5) to the Leidseplein. Then change for tram 3 to the Haarlemmerpoort, and from that you can take bus 22 (I think) to Central Station again (or walk).

Best areas: Jordaan and the Pijp.

Have fun!!!

Amsterdam is noted for many outstanding museums, including the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Rembrandt House Museum, the Anne Frank House, and its world-class symphony orchestra, the Concertgebouworkest, whose home base is the Concertgebouw.

Notable is its red-light district, de Wallen, where prostitution is legal and regulated (although pimping is illegal). The red-light district is located in the center of the city along major canals and is clearly marked on maps.

I went when I was 21. Van gogh museum was the best. Stay at greenhouse effect hotel if you like to smoke. If you want someplace lower key stay at old quarter hotel. Both downtown. Be open to new people and you'll have a great time, amsterdam is really fun and surreal.
