Originally visited Vietnam in 1967 and spent a year. It made a big impression on me, then a 22 year old Midwesterner. It was about 5 years ago when I went back and then again and again, staying 2-3 months at a crack and now it seems I'm always on my way back.
Doug's Vietnam travel guide (http:vietnam-now.com). is a good source of information, even has a travel guide. Overall Vietnam is a safe, small country, so its easy and comfortable to get around in.
Don't bother with shoes and socks, comfortable sandals are best and of course light weight clothes. Vietnamese dress, looking good is important and if you do the same you automaticly are respected. Men don't wear shorts outside the home but school boys do and girls and women just don't. I wear them during the day but my friends have warn me down so at night I wear long pants.
Also, having your laundry done is cheap so there is really no reason to look grungy, as some traveller's do. Though, keep in mind that most laundry is sun dryed so in the rainy season it may take an extra day to get your clothing back.
Always I tell people this and here I go again, Vietnam is a place you feel more than see. So try to keep an open mind and get out on your own away from the tourists, stand on a street corner in HCMCity and watch life go by, visit a market like Ben Thanh, stop for a beer on the street, eat Pho, use a motor bike taxi or a cyclo, go to a Vietnamese night club and smile a lot at every one you see.

this question is answered weekly on this site . just click on"resolved questions" in this catagory and you will find 20-30 solid responces.. be an adventurer not a tourist. it is your 1st time? stay along the coast, sai gon, nha trang ,hoi an, ha noi. take the overnight train, or plane to those places. then from there take 1-2 day tour out of a travel agency [ there all over or your hotel can book you... read the other responces ....much too much info to write here
