I would lay how ever I felt comfortable. I have four children and I layed on my back with all four. I just turned 39 two weeks ago. My oldest is 21 my youngest is 6 months. They have changed so many things since my first baby. Half of the things they tell you not to do now you could do when I had my first. Point being All of my children turned out just fine.

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I tried to avoid lying on my back at all times. It restricts the blood flow to the placenta. I mean, don't go all crazy if you aren't that far along. Just try to fall asleep on one of your sides. If you wake up and are lying on your back/stomach, don't worry, just roll over. As long as your propped up enough, you can lie on your back to read or something. Just not flat on your back. Congrats on being pregnant!

After the 4th month you shouldn't lie on your back. Many women don't have any problems with it, but if you start to feel light-headed, dizzy and possibly breathless don't do it. The weight of your uterus puts pressure on one of your major blood vessels and can cut off your blood supply.

If you are big it can also restrict blood to your lower extremeties and the placenta. I am 38 weeks pregnant and huge and I lay on my back all the time because it is comfortable! Do what makes you feel good.

I think up until mid-second trimester it is safe. Just unti you start to get big, b/c it restricts the bloodflow the baby.

Back-sleeping can put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids. so, not really a good idea. Check website attached
