What's the best/cheapest route? Any other tips/places to check out on the way? Any other suggestions?

rent a car. then you control where you go, where you stop, how long you stay at any place.

Well, I've been to Croatia, and honestly, only route I can recommend you from Dubrovnik to Belgrade is plane. If you take the car, you will have to drive either through Bosnia and Herzegovina (as a foreigner who don't know the roads or the language, I do not recommend that) or all over Croatia. Mind you, Croatia is shaped like croissant, so you will have to drive from most southern tip all the way around... Now there is good highway most of the way, but still, I think it would make more then 1,000km. If they have bus routes, you might want to take that, bus probably takes shorter route and I believe drivers know where to drive. I don't think there is train from Dubrovnik to Belgrade. Why don't you go to Monte ***** while in Dubrovnik, it's not very far, I think only about 40km or maybe even less.

I rented a car and drove from Dubrovnik to Zadar. The other option was taking a bus. Renting the car cost more but it was so worth it. You stop where and when you want, plus the comforts (a/c, your own space) is priceless. The bus trip takes longer, makes frequent stops for pick-ups/discharges, and the fumes are tough. If you can get a car, it's well worth it.

renting car is good idea, but i am from croatia so try not to rent it here because is pretty expensive.im not sure that i understand your route...perhaps is better during summer to have a route along croatian coast...like dubrovnik, makarska, split, primosten, sibenik, vodice, biograd, zadar,
novalja,etc...best fun is in primosten(club aurora),vodice(hacienda),biograd (that where i live) and novalja(croatian ibiza)... thats if your interstend in partys like me.for cultural upgrading best way is dubrovnik,trogir,zadar.... visit belgrad in winter, than is it much better as i heard....
p.s.some town names seem to be very upseting for yahoo so they wont display them...i dont know why....
