Pandora was sent by the Gods of Olympus to the brother of Prometheus, the god who stole fire and brought it to man. Pandora's Box contained evil, disease, jelousy, and a wealth of other nasty things. The legend says that she had been created by the gods to punish mankind for asccepting the gift of fire from Prometheus. When her natural curiosity got the better of her she opened her box and let the evil things into the world. Beofre the box was epty she closed it, trapping hope inside and keeping it with her always. It reinforces the point that the only thing man has left to lose is hope.

In the first place please be sure to go to www.greekmyths.com and read the story of Pandora and the box. The box was never hers to keep. The story goes as follows:
Prometheus stole a secret fire, so Zeus created Pandora, as punishment for Prometheus's actions. Actually for all man's actions aswell. See the secret fire was given to man by Prometheus (who was a God). To punish him Zeus chained him up and put a eagle over him, for his punishment the eagle ate his liver every day (he was infact a god, so it grew back every day). To punish man Zeus and the other gods created Pandora, said to be the first woman.
All the gods gave her gifts, and the most remarkable of these gifts was a box. It is unclear who gave it to her, but it is said that it was Zeus. She was told never to open the box, one day she did. All the misfortunes and evils slipped out. When she closed it only hope was left inside. It is unclear how long the earth suffered from this, but one day Pandora went back to the box en set loose hope aswell. so now in times of evil and misfortune the world has one thing to rely on, and that is hope.

Note: The Theory has never been proven and no have has ever found Pandora's box, thus it does not exist!

She's overcome with curiosity and so opens the box. The seven evils (Despair, Corruption, Violence, Greed, Jealousy, Hate, and Vanity) are all let out into the world. Pandora closes the box again before Hope can come out BUT, upon hearing Hope's sweet and innocent voice, opens the box once more. Thus humans are set upon by many miseries, but the smallest spirit in the box proves to be the strongest of all and Hope helps them to overcome all the others.

Actually Pandora herself was the gods' way of punishing mankind. Pandora means all gifts in Greek and when the gods created her they each endowed her with their divine trait. The most important of her gifts was her dowry: a jar (not box) that must never be opened. However she was so curious that she opened it and released all the evils of mankind (plague, greed, sorrow, etc) and the only thing that remained locked inside was hope.

If you look in the library you'll find whole books of 'creation myths' of various primitive cultures. Most of them are very simple, with talking animals, the spirits of plants and rivers and rocks, etc. In fact Genesis is probably the best conceived, the best developed. They are interesting to read and compare because of things like this. Many of them blame women for the imperfection of the world, but also for hope. I have my own theory why that is. I mean it seems obvious. In ancient times women weren't considered important, they were thought to be barely human. For instance, people didn't believe that a child inherited any 'DNA' from the mother, she was just a vessel for the man's seed. Ancient Greeks and Jews believed that women never really matured. They never grew body hair, their voices never deepened, they never got the physical strength of men. So they were like children all their lives. But still, women had a strong influence on men. Men -wanted- them, they were fascinated by them. And under the circumstances, this was seen as a weakness! So Genesis blames Eve for corrupting Adam and Greek mythology blames Pandora for all the trouble in the world. BTW, interesting fact, Eve did not sin by eating the fruit. God never told Eve not to eat it, only Adam.
