I'm watching King Kong, which made me curious. Is that simply a popculture creation, or do they actually bang on their chests?

Male gorillas do actually beat their chest.

As do other male animals, each with their distinct behavoiur, male gorillas beat their chest as a symbol of their strength, their leadership, their sovereignty and reasons as such.

yes a male gorilla will slap his chest with cuffed hands to make a loud sound to warn the rest of the "family" of danger, and to try to frighten any predators. But this is usually reserved to the Leader usually a silverback.

Yes. The male gorilla like all other male animals shows a sign of dominance. For instance lions roar.

I can't speak for the other apes, but I'm 99 percent ape and I beat my chest now and then.

They actually do beat on their chest. it makes a sound similar to a drum, and is used to intimidate other male animals
