Did you ever go in Europe ? To my first question “Good reasons to be proud of being American?” I’ve had “it’s a free country” as an answer. Ok, most of the countries in the world aren’t but a lot are, and even more. Can you go in the streets and scream everywhere that the war is useless and that Bush is a Stupid idiot? What happens if you’re poor and your son has a heart or a brain problem, are you free to have him operated without spending money or are U ******? In Germany, France, Holland etc… You have what we call “Social Security” so tell me what’s so much better in the US. (This is not to put the US down, I’m half American and I love that country, not as much as Europe but let’s not change subjects.) What does the US have that is more liberal/free than Countries in Europe? Why do you call it the land of the free?

the phrase comes hard wired in american brains... they dont really know what it means or else they would have fair judgement upon what their country is doing to rest of the world.

There's no such thing as a free country. If you look at all the rights supplied to us by the US constitution, you will see the US government has limited each and every single one of them:
The right to free speech - we can't discuss "sensitive" information in the media during the times of war (like how the government has been keeping illegal tabs on its citizen's phone and bank records), nor can any American write in any type of media that states threats against the President, and currently the constitutional rights's of the media is being threatened by the government.
The right to assembly - we can't hold group gathered protest or any assembly, without approval from the government, and even then they can deny this constitutional right.
Freedom of religion - In current times, Muslims are looked at with prejudice, and are often ridiculed to "random" searches and seizures by police and military, for no reason other than being a Muslim.
Separation from church and state - The government is not allowed to promote any religion over any other, and yet the President is always sworn in on a Bible during his inauguration by a minister, voting is done in churches, the ten commandments are posted in many government offices, congress is always sworn in on a bible, and sometimes they say a prayer before each session.
In today's US society, you have to say and do things a certain way or the public or government will criticize you. After 9/11, people who didn't put flags on their cars often found their cars vandalized or their homes spray painted with graffiti with words like "unpatriotic" and "Arab lover." Even after 9/11 criticizing the Bush administration was taboo to an extent, where saying anything that didn't put Bush into a god-like figure would result in backlash.
The only true "free" type of country, is where there is complete anarchy and no laws.

America has social security BUT.... The politicians cant keep their hands out of the social security pot so it is slowly dieing. And as I have said in some of my Questions Americans are Arrogant,we act as though our opinion is the only one that matters and every one else should live by our rules or suffer the consequences. I am an American and I'm Proud to be one (just as I'm sure that in France the people are proud to Frenchmen, and in Japan their proud to be Japanese etc..) But America is slowly becoming a Fascist state, Right now we do have the right to run down the street and make our opinion about the President if we want that's freedom of speech, But I'm sure that if Bush has his way he will put an end to that to. Our Current Administration (Bush and Co.) are slowly stripping our rights from us, they do it by using fear tactics and lying, America is slowly being transformed, where we are going no one knows, But I don't like the direction we are taking. YES I love my country, BUT I fear my government! and a person who is afraid of their government is never truly free.

No one said we were more free. That's just a good thing about America. Who said we were more free? That's one of the good things about being an American. This little statement. Yea America has it's flaws. But every country does. And yes you can go into the streets and say bush is useless.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Every country that is free modeled itself after America. That would be where I would start answering that question. Yes, it is true, many countries have liberties or freedoms, as you call it, as compared to American citizens in regards to medical care, social services and any number of other things that you think make other societies free.
Freedom of choice. We don't always make the best choices, but we maintain that freedom.
In America, we are free to chose what we want without relying on the government for handouts. Yes many still do rely on hand outs from the government, but a smart and educated person has the ability to invest more of their hard earned money towards whatever their hearts desire rather than give up half their income in taxes to support others. I'm sure in other countries as well as America, there are more people pulling form the collective that there are adding to the pot.

I like Holland and Germany, but I am afraid we would not all fit!!
Though that's not a bad idea. Lets all pack up and go and see how long corporations can make money with no workers!! Bet that would stop these multi million salaries, even to those who can't run a company, like GM and especially Enron!!
It is obvious my little friend above doesn't know a damn thing about Illegal immigrants! Few, if any illegals are receiving any service because they have to provide an original birth certificate. Who is sucking you dry is corporate America and companies like Walmart! Almost nothing they take in stays in the community! It is all sucked to where ever their money goes, but you can get $5.50 and hour working for them!

Canada is a much more free country than the states ever thought of being, and yes, we get free medical care here, and pensions for our elderly and infirm and people too lazy to work. I think only Sweden is better, socially than Canada

Your are right, America is not as free as it once was.
America has slowly become less and less free.
The government now is doing things with out our permission.
Which is pointless.
People have to remember that the government is there to serve us.
Legalize drugs.
Get rid of the patriot act.
Revolution is near.
