Swallowing phlegm is safe because most of the bacteria/pathogens that are found within the phlegm would have been destroyed by the acid in the stomach. Phlegm is actually composed of cell/bacteria debris that has been formed when our body's white cells attack the bacteria that caused the infection. So it really doesn't matter whether you spit or swallow. No ill effects would occur if you choose to swallow the phlegm.

the phlegm will be disgested by the secretion in the stomach which is acidic. the secretion in the stomach will kill most of the harmful bacteria that will come in contact to it. so its pretty safe to swallow it.

Nothing. You are meant to swallow it. It is sterilised by the acid in your stomach. No problem.
