You probably have too much software installed, including too many programs running at the same time.
If it has been more than a year since you last formatted your hard drive, I suggest you do that. Remember to back-up any files you need, since a format will completely erase your hard drive and you'll need to install an operating system (windows, linux) and software you NEED to use (don't install crappy stuff).
For a less intrusive solution, you may try to check out this in Windows:
Start / All Programs / Startup
Programs listed in "Startup" start when you switch on your computer. Too many programs there take up a lot of time to load when you boot your computer, and since they begin to run at that point can slow down your system in general. Try removing those you don't use from that list. You don't have to uninstall them, just remove from the "Startup" list and start them yourself when you need to use them.
I hope this has been clear enough, good luck to you! ;)

How slow? When it start to slow down? from startup? I can't really tell U wats wrong, from here? 512mb system is good only for running ms office basic on XP. U need at less one GB for multitasking. Not to about talking about graphic kind of thing and photo editing!
Ur problem may be due adware /spyware. try cleaning Ur system with adware cleaner like windows defender ..ect.
Easier way is to reformat Ur system and reinstall a fresh OS. Them install all other software again and install a securities defender suite like mcafee. And keep it clean... don't install and uninstall unnecessary software!

Get a better processor(preferably AMD64) and get a 64bit operating system.
Use the windows classic theme. It's faster.
Don't use Internet Explorer(Because, spyware slows down your system).
Also, FAT32 filesystem is a lot faster than NTFS.

well.. clearing temporary internet Files, performing disk cleanup, disk defragmentation, Scanning virus time to Time.... that's all to make pc faster..... applications should not be overloaded... like nortons they eat lots of memory.. responsible for slowing down pc, so better chose some other antivirus like avg or Avast if you need protection+ speed

There are many ways to make your computer faster.
Try to delete any unwanted program from ur computer.
Make a seprate partiotion for each purpose.(one for windows, one for programs, one for games, &....).
Defrag ur computer with a powerfull tool like Diskeeper.
Seprate windows page file from the windows partition.(right click on my computer, properties, advanced, performance, advanced, virtual memory, change, choose a clean partition that u have not many files on it and never will not fit it, set a value and ok).
Delete any unwanted program from it's startup(start, run, mscondig, startup, uncheck unwanted programs).
good luck.

Perform a defragmentation which sorts all the files in an order that is easier for the computer to read when looking for something. THis inturn runs faster.... also called a de-frag

many things: delete old unused programs, make the comp stop processing unused programs, perform a defrag every once in a while, perform regular checks for viruses, or, get even more RAM!

Get a Mac. :-)
Jokes aside, reinstall Windows if you can, don't install smileys and spywares, keep it clean and install only what you need, get 2Gb of Ram and google for "make Windows XP faster".

sooo many ways really. Check for spyware, virus's, etc. List what components you have and I can help you better.
The best and most easy way to make it faster is honestly to format.
