The majority of the respondents in the various opinion polls conducted across the world agrees that Zidane should get the award. Why do you need more?

I personally agree, but it is not the reason I am participating in this discussion. Several answers in this question but also in several others refereed to the fact that the main reason we should not agree with what Zidan did and why he shouldn't have received the award was the bad and aggressive example for youngsters around the globe. Now, that is really BullS. If the only way the youngsters are going to learn violence in this world would be this Zidane's action, now we are very lucky. Of course, it is not by far, and saying that....is, well, kind of stupid. He was by far the best player and should receive this award for being that...Don't forget that he is one of the best player ever...and what happened, good or bad, is actually history.

Zidane deserved the award. More so than any of the cheating Italians. There isn't a guy out there who would stand for a stranger talking bad about his mother, who also happens to be hospitalised. So Zidane did what he had to do, and I understand why. The award was deserving.

My theory is that it will be taken away as:
1) Zidane need an exemplary punishment otherwise all the beautiful things done by FIFA and said on fair play etc etc will go down the drain
2) punishment could be 5 game ban but if he is retired that is not a punishment. Could also be a suspension for a few months but again he is retired.
3) what is the only punishment which may hurt a bit and is really a punishment ? Take away the award.

Of course. He is by a million mile the best player in the world. For the last 8 years he has completely dominated Planet football. Even the greatest like Pelé said he was a pure genius. Ask Ronaldo, Ronaldinho or any other players who played against him what they think!!!
The headbutt was unfortunate but I am suprised that people always criticise the reactions but never the cause of the incident. Marco Materazzi should be banned from a football pitch for life! We do not need racist pigs like that....

Zidane deserved it.no doubt. How would you react to someone calling your mother. The Gallic temperament came to the boil again, remember Eric (the king) Cantona. How many more people would love to stuff evil insults about their family down the throats of the big mouth they come from.
Viva la France ( And Im an England fan) credit where its due.

The award was voted for at half time, still he has been a great player and a role model for young footballers all over the world and he also showed Brazil the real meaning of Joga bonita in this world cup!
Sad to see him leave as he did(headbutt)
one of the true all time greatest players!

No ,it's a disgrace to get the best player award after headbutting an opponent like he did, does not matter what Matteratzzi said, or whatever the players name is.He's a paid professional and should behave like one.

He didn't get the award AFTER what he did. The vote was held at the end of the first half. He did what he did later.
