Why would you need to delete it immediately, as opposed to simply abandoning it?

Well, you can do what you want: if you want to delete your account, you can do that, but first you maybe would have to save the e-mail addresses of your real contacts (sure you'll need them). And you don't have to wait any time, just open another one even in the same e-mail provider.
But, if you want to keep your e-mail address, I recommend some patience and a lot of discipline because you'll have to fight with the "I'll-need-this-eventually" syndrome.
Currently, there are many ways to organize the email in the providers, specially by folders. You have to start this task, ordering your mail by date, name or size (what you prefer!!), and scan it, read it, and decide if you'll keep it or not.
The main question is: "Would the world collapse if I erase this message?". If the answer is negative, erase it!!!. If there are some messages with important documents, save the docs, and save the sender or the recipient (maybe you are the sender) in your address book, with a little commentary about the doc or subject of the mail, and erase the message.
Also, you have to block some senders of spam and junk mail. If they are strangers to you, don't be afraid to erase their messages. And if they are from friends or colleagues, take note of that and the next time, send to them a very polite but firm message about your position against spam. If they are your truly friends, they'll understand.
Another idea could be having specialized e-mails: one for the family and friends, one for the job, one for the e-shopping, etc. So, the only thing you would have to do is sending the new address to your contacts.
In the end, you'll have a very organized, clean and not so big mail account (well, maybe 2 or 3 accounts, but very organized truly :) )
I hope these ideas will be helpful for you. Go for it ;)

Is it yahoo?,You can delete the whole account
Go to the Yahoo account deletion page and login with your username and password. Then, to confirm once and for all that you want to delete everything associated with your login profile, enter your password again and click the button that says ‘Terminate this Account.’

You didn't say what your ISP was. With Yahoo, you can uninstall mail in your control panel, then reinstall with a new ID.In others, you just get a new user name and let the old one sit idle.
