Because it's more accepted than it was (nowhere near where it needs to be, don't get me wrong), people don't have need of the "code" types of things anymore. The hanky thing has become obselete; we can often just ask. As for actual visibility: now that people don't feel they NEED to anymore, they think about the choice. Visibility DOES come with a cost. Some people make the compromise (as always; "things aren't THAT bad, we'll just keep quiet and be left alone"), some people recognize that there's more freedoms in some ways with no visibility (I can check out guys without them knowing a LOT easier if I'm not wearing my rainbow polo). Mainly, I think it's just that people don't see a need for it as much. :-/

the signals have gained popularity and now that straight people know what it means, showing a sign just makes you more vulnerable to getting bashed. I live in a small redneck town and a week after coming out I was getting called names by strangers. There is no way I would want to advertise my sexuality. No way I would ever put a sticker on my car. I like to see it on other peoples but i think its just asking for trouble. Im moving to a bigger city soon but there are gay bashers everywhere. I would hate to come outside and see that my car has been keyed because some prick thinks that it will make me straight. The rainbow, triangle, and right ear piercing is out there, we just need a new symbol that only we and intelligent straight people will know for a while. It sounds dumb, and it sounds like im saying we should all run and hide, things are better than back in the 80's but Im really not confident enough to advertise myself.

Well that could be a good thing or a bad thing.
Bad: People got tired of their rainbow adorned stuff getting jacked with. Of there were some places they went where they thouhgt, you know, these people don;t REALLY need to know who I'm interested in boinking now do they, next car, I'm not putting anything on it.
Good:The flags and "in your faceness" of the 80's is no longer necessary. gay people are accepted now as equals as more communities enact gay rights laws. there haev been so many gay people on television, movies, media portrayed in a positive light as kind, and important members of society that things are changing.
Remember all the brouhaha that Ellen DeGeneres caused on her sit com? people turned off because she was so militant about it. now, she has her own award winning talk show and is loved again because she is more relaxed.
thanks to the older, wiser homosexual community who did everything they possibly could to eradicate the 'molester' stigma, this generation has it a lot easier. AND I AM NOT SAYING THAT WAS A TRUE THING, but to be honest, many years ago, the "you're a pervert" attitude was much more prevalent.

Eureka Springs Arkansas is a great place. It isn't rednecky and the town has a large percentage of gays. Diversity Days is one of the big Celebrations there, and all of the B&Bs are run by gay people. It is also a town of hippies, artists and musicians, bikers and religious people. A prize in the Ozarks! No one will bash you there! Come visit!

I don't think it is needed anymore and the in your face attitude of the gay pride paraders has left such a stigma that many gays are turned off with the whole lifestyle.
This is why g0ys has gained such popularity. Guys who are into other guys don't all want to ASSociate with a culture that is not representative of what they are into.

I live in a big city where there is a large gay community. I still see bumper stickers, window cling stickers, etc. in fact, i do have a few small, subtle ones on my own car. maybe we're trying to be a little more subtle? I'm not sure.

Because the generation today has it really easy and have not gone through the h* l l that we did early on to be accepted. They really don't know what it is to want to be accepted. It is taken for granted so therefore they think there is no use to let others know of their existence.
