I do a lot of woodburning. It's not difficult to do a simple pattern. You can get very complex if you want however. Just draw or trace a simple line drawing onto a piece of wood and lightly trace over it with the tool. You will get better with practice.

The easiest would be custom signs or scene scapes. If your looking to do it for money You can sell at them craft shows and flea markets. Warning it doesn't pay well. I am a woodworker and when doing it professionally I make 18-25 dollars an hour. I do wood burning as well yet I have yet to ever see any on a project or been requested to do any. There are much more automated and efficient ways to accomplish the same outcome

Woodburning is a lot of fun. All you need to get started is an iron and some good-looking wood peices. There is a layer of artistry that is required, but you don't have to be super-creative to work a wood-burning iron. The technique you must use can only be "discovered" through trial and error, it can't be described in words.

Get a pattern, or just freehand from a picture or live-still. Have fun!

You can burn wood, but you can also burnish leather and cork. My brother made coasters out of cork which if you go to the auto parts store and ask for cork gasket material you get a huge piece for three dollars and if you get crafting cork at the craft store you get half as much for twice as much.
go to trhis site to see what can be accomplished beyond coaster and wall plaques www.firestarterpyrography.com
