Because the larger valued coins used to be made of gold and silver - which people would shave off to sell for the value of the metal. Pennies and nickels were not considered as valuable or necessary to protect from loss.

Once a long time ago all coins had smooth edges. But back in the gold rush days some store keepers would shave off some of the edge of the gold coins. Banks stated to make coins with the serrated edge we know of now. But coins are no longer made of real gold and silver so that edge is no longer needed.

I'm not really sure but someone told me it was so that the others would be harder to counterfeit. But that's weird because who would counterfeit change? lol. Well it could just be so it's easier for us to tell them apart.

the penny is close to the same size as the dime and the nickle is close to the quarter......so my guess is ....for the blind?
