I think the best trick for never over applying makeup is to pick a focal point on your face for the day- lips? eyes? Let's say you choose lips, then give yourself wonderful color on the lips, lipliner, gloss- the works- but UNDERPLAY everything else. When you choose eyes, go with a nude shade of lipstick. I have found that when you play-up a single feature- you cant go wrong.

Use the mirror and stop when it is enough.
There are no rules about the amount of make-up to use, it is all individual. It helps if you practice a lot, at home when nobody will see you. The right amount for you comes from practice, and moderation, and having specific goals that, when you reach, you stop.

Mix your foundation with oil free moisturizer, or, apply moisturizer and then foundation while it's still damp. This will help you to use less of the heavy foundation over a greater area.

My best advice to you is puy your make-up in good lighting, it's tricky cause if the lighting is not bright you can over do it or out it on the kind of lighting your going to be in. Less is better though, at night though it's fine to put more on or make it a littl dramatic, especially if you're going out.

Put on your makeup in direct sunlight. You will be able to see how thick it is going on. When you figure out how to do it so that you can't see it in direct sunlight, you will have found the right amount. That's for foundation anyway.
