Consciousness changes throughout life. If it survives death, does it stay the same as it was at the moment of death, or become something else? If it stays the same and the dead person is a fetus, will it be aware of anything at all? Will the consciousnesses of dead infants be less aware than those of dead adults? Or will they undergo some change that makes the differences in awareness nonexistent or irrelevant?

Not that I know all the answers but here is my take on it based on my knowledge of hindu scriptures.
a) Consciousness is not same as physical awareness of brain. Consciousness is independent of your being alive or dead. Your soul is all the time conscious about its previous lives and future lives but what your physical consciousness shields it from knowing
b) Consciousness doesn't undergo any changes. As we purity ourselves, we starting getting connected to our true consciousness. Those who attain full consciousness, become aware of truth of life and for them their physical changes become irrelevant.
c) If you have grace of some of the masters who have attained consciousness, you can connect to your true consciousness temporarily. In Hindu system, it is called awakening of Kundalini.

If you trust the basic laws of physics, you must agree that energy can be neither created or destroyed. It merely changes form. That said, when we die, where does our energy go? Consciousness, as a metaphor for our life energy, can neither be created nor destroyed, so does it pass to a new dimension or does it fragment and disperse. Does this conscious energy become inhaled by others and become the foundation for our memories of our dead loved ones?
