In life, people who work long hours at least 5 days a week, or those in school that put in the after hours late into the night at the library... they have a drive... but what is that drive?

Is the drive:
The desire for success?
- - - or - - -
The fear of failure?

I think it's individual. I am motivated by a desire for success. Or even, a desire to complete the things I know I will eventually have to do, and get on with things I like.

But there are a lot of people who are motivated by the fear of failure. I think that is scary, because no matter how hard you try, there are things that you will fail, and that will cause self-punishment, and, potentially, trauma and loss of motivation. Fear of anything is a very bad long-term motivation.

Well, it is a fact that women's fertility declines as they get older, and your changes of being able to conceive can be reduced as you age. However, i had two children when I was in my forties, and there are plenty of other women who have done the same, so I certainly wouldn't rule out the possiblity that you can establish a career first and then have children later. However, the longer you leave it the greater the chance that you will find yourself infertile. It all depends how much you want a family, how long you are prepared to delay it, how great a risk you are prepared to take. Everything in life has risks. In any case, I seriously doubt that you are going to be infertile before you have taken your doctorate, unless you are planning to take a VERY long time over it.

In the most general case, the fear of failure gives these people the drive to succeed. Its simple logic: you can't fail if you succeed. But is it really? Just because you succeed in one realm of life doesnt mean you haven't failed in another.
