North is a geological constant, as it also works pretty well with compasses. What? The magnetic north pole is in fact a south pole? Yes, we know that, but we are so used to it being north/up, we just reversed our compasses so it points "North."

this has origin in stone ages.Stone agers erected a stick in direction of North star which had same position all yr when they started observing the sky.thus,a very old habit of mankind!!!

because if you know where north is, then you can also find where south east and west are.....
