All this middle east stuff you hear on the news is just an excuse to raise the gas prices. The oil industry is making millions off from these ridiculously high gas prices. If the American people did not go to work and did not buy anything or spend any money anywhere for at least 2 days, would that wake up the government and get them to do something about the gas prices? Or would that hurt the oil industry enough where they have to lower them? When I have to take out loans from the bank just to get gas to go to work on, this has gone way too far!!!

Corporations are enjoying a windfall of our dollars, and dollars mean political power, and political power means pressure on just the right politician so they will be absent on that day or even change the vote.
Face it, all the talk about Democracy in America needs to be factored with some political reality about money interests and who makes the laws.
Democracy often takes a back seat to money interests. What else explains the oil industries and American car companies holding off the obvious need of reducing our reliance on Middle East Oil? And then a bunch of lobbyist get into the White House and we end up in a war of exploitation for oil.
Oil is not called an American Vital Interest for no reason. We are totally dependent on it. And we are very willing to have our way with oil realities.

It would be a good idea, but think for a moment. The majority of the oil comes from Middle East countries. If we were suddenly to stop depending on oil for many things they would have no marketing leverage, maybe we should concentrate on other sources of energy instead of desperately holding on to what is going to run out at some point in the future anyway.

I read a good National Geographic article where they pointed out all the things in your own home that are produced from oil. Frankly it boggled the mind. We are overdependent on oil.

Did we not learn anything at all during the oil crisis of the seventies?

By the way, you complain about high prices, the gas prices in Mexico have been increased every single month by two cents. This has been going on for over 8 years. So with each passing month every liter you buy costs two cents more. Supposedly Mexico is swimming in oil, but gas has never been cheap there.

Only a small portion of the population would be involved. I won't need gas until Thursday, so I could join a two-day boycott without changing my fuel purchasing habits at all. Shipping and transportation industries could not participate without severe damage to their own interests.

If you did manage to organize an effective boycott, you would devastate local businesses and the price of gas would go anywhere but down. Shutting down supply (even local gas stations) increases demand, which drives up cost.

Possible, but i think it would have the opposite effect. When the oil companies hear of this they will raise prices to cover any income that may be lost on this "walk-out".

it may work...sounds to me like the email that has been going around where noone should buy gas from exxon because it is the biggest gas provider and if they lowered their prices all the competition would have to as well...problem is...there isnt enough people willing to do it...same with your theory...many ppl will not do it

.. hahaha... have you seen Americans?

they are far too concerned with the next episode of "American Idol" to bother.. even if they did want too... they want to go buy their crap... that's all they really care about... the only reason they want the price to go down, is so they can buy more crap...

they aren't going to walk to buy their crap either... they would just make up some lame excuse like "it's hot outside... I don't want to sweat"...

in other words... America doesn't care...

I think it would be interesting to try. If you have any kind of public transport in your area, consider protesting the oil/fuel situation by refusing to drive and use the public transport or walking.
