i really love doing comics, 3 panel, etc etc, i'm thinking of starting my own web site... i'd also really love to be able to profit from it... if the comics do well, but unsure if it would just be a hobby...

I advise you use Google AdSense, it's easy and not too disrupting for your website.
You need a simple domain name, and server space. Since your work is graphical, but not moving, 50 MB should be a good start.
Unless you know how to design websites, I advise you to hire a designer to make a site, and than learn enough to be able to maintain it yourself. There are enough webdesigners who do this in their spare time, and don't charge that much, but still make nice sites.
If you have enough time, you could also get Dreamweaver and lear it by trying

Then you need visitors, because the more hits your site gets, the more money you make. Send the link to family and friends, online communities were you are in, try getting your site blogged as many times as possible, and if your site is good enough and offers new content regulary, people will come back. Remember you earn more money if visitors follow links to the sponsors sites, you could ask this of your relatives and friends.

Some great answers were already given but it is a good idea to have your own website, just start off small and work on it regularly
maybe a free site and once you can afford it get your own domain
I will post a link that helped me out with webpages

They would contact you or you would have to go for an interview if they said they were looking for someone to make a comic adaptation of that. If you write something original then I would think you pitch the idea to them and they will let you know if they like it.

Do what the big guys do - create characters people will want to buy on tshirts, as toys - merchandise! And don't sell out until you get that million dollar syndication / animation series deal.
